Why I chose MODEC
I joined MODEC in 1971 – more than thirty years ago. Looking back at my career path I can say that my decision to join MODEC was a good one.
People have different criteria when they choose their career. In my case, working in a big organization seemed unchallenging. Back in the 1970s, MODEC was a new and small company with approximately 50 employees. What they were doing seemed very adventurous and that was the main reason why I chose MODEC.
My major in the Tokyo University was engineering, so as an engineer I engaged in the construction of offshore facilities and drilling rigs for the first ten years or so. In 1985 MODEC was awarded the first FPSO project from Marathon for the Kakap field development offshore Indonesia. As a project manager of the Marathon project, I sat at the negotiating table with the client, coordinated the work progress with the shipyard and subcontractors, among other things. In the 1980s, an FPSO was still a new and not necessarily a proven technology and only a handful of FPSO units were built, therefore the Marathon project was a very challenging project for us.
Over the past two decades, the FPSO technology has been widely accepted by the industry and FPSOs have become the primary method among all floating production facilities. With the rapid growth of the floating production market including FPSOs, FSOs and TLPs, MODEC has grown, too, to become a leading floating production systems contractor and operator around the world.
