About FPSO/FSO

FPSO and FSO systems are the primary method for many offshore oil and gas producing regions around the world.

Most FPSOs/FSOs are ship-shaped and can be secured to the seabed via a variety of mooring systems, the choice of which is determined by the specific environment. They are suitable for a wide range of water depth, environmental conditions and can be designed with the capability of staying on location for continuous operations for 20 years or longer.

An FPSO is a floating production system that receives fluids (crude oil, water and a host of other things) from a subsea reservoir through risers, which then separate fluids into crude oil, natural gas, water and impurities within the topsides production facilities onboard. Crude oil stored in the storage tanks of the FPSO is offloaded onto shuttle tankers to go to market or for further refining onshore.

Hull

The hull of an FPSO may be newly built (New-Build) or may be converted from existing tankers (Conversion). Once the development of an oil field is complete, the FPSO can be relocated to another oil field and reused, in which case it will be modified (Modification) to meet the conditions of the new oil field. In either case, it is the only system in the world that is designed and built according to the sea conditions, installation requirements, production volume, production period, etc. and is made to order specifically for the development of each oil field.

With the aim of realizing our most important goal of maximizing the life cycle value that we provide to our stakeholders, including our clients, over a long term of more than 20 years from the start to the end of the operation of each FPSO, we provide new build FPSO solutions that leverage the design and construction technologies we have cultivated as a leader in the FPSO industry, together with our extensive experience in operations and maintenance. These solutions comprise a standardized, scalable new build hull family.

New Generation Hull
  • Next Generation Hull (NGH) is conceived with MODEC’s “designed-to-operate” mindset.
  • NGH combines broad adaptability to topside configurations and sea states with standardized, proven core elements (Class AiP approved), minimizing redesign, accelerating early-phase engineering, approvals, and deployment.
  • Based on decades of FPSO operational experience, NGH provides optimum design margin to adequately accommodate the various project specific requirements without compromising safety, layout efficiency, repeatability, or overall performance.
  • NGH comprises three variants—NGH, NGH-VL and NGH-VL(Short) —spanning topsides weights and deck footprints ranges with up to approximately 2 million barrels storage capacities and can also accommodate about 70,000 mt topside modules including future modules such as GHG reduction systems or gas compression, etc.

Conversion

Ever since we carried out the construction (conversion) of an FPSO for the first time in 1985, we have converted a number of oil tankers into FPSOs/FSOs. We have built strong relationships with major shipyards around the world, and many of the FPSOs we built, including the FPSO Kakap Natuna, which began its production in 1986, continue to carry out production activities today.
