FNPP(Floating Nuclear Power Plant)
A Low Carbon Floating Solution for Energy Addition
As AI and digitalization accelerate electricity demand, the challenge is not only energy transition—it is energy addition. To meet future demand while decarbonizing, nuclear power is a promising option for delivering affordable, inherently safe, and reliable energy at scale. MODEC is uniquely positioned to enable floating nuclear solutions by leveraging proven hull and mooring technologies, execution capabilities on ultra large offshore projects, and global supply chains capable of modularized construction. With disciplined cross-continent project management, MODEC can be a key enabler in realizing FNPPs. To help satisfy rising global energy demands, MODEC is conducting R&D on FNPPs as a pragmatic, low carbon energy source within the energy mix.
Ocean's potential unlocked with FNPP
MODEC's mission—"Unlocking the ocean's potential by supplying unique floating solutions for a sustainable future"—speaks to using the offshore environment to solve onshore constraints. FNPPs do exactly that.
- By situating nuclear assets at sea, FNPPs operate away from civilian populations, simplifying emergency planning and minimizing evacuation requirements in extreme scenarios.
- Surrounded by abundant cooling water, they can enhance passive safety margins and thermal management while expanding siting flexibility for nations with limited land, dense coastlines, or sensitive ecosystems.
- Offshore deployment also enables standardized designs and repeatable yard-based fabrication, improving quality assurance and shortening delivery timelines.
Our FNPP concept
MODEC's concept envisions a large scale reactor—hundreds of megawatts, up to gigawatt class—delivering dependable baseload power with economies of scale. Light water reactor technology is considered for its proven track record and mature supply chain. The floating platform integrates robust hull and mooring architecture with modularized plant systems, enabling factory style construction.
In July 2024, MODEC signed an NDA with Advanced Float, a company that shares this vision, and is jointly advancing concept development to bring scalable, low carbon offshore nuclear power to market. Our aim is to industrialize offshore nuclear—pairing proven reactor technology with MODEC's execution strengths—to deliver safe, scalable, and cost effective low carbon power where it is most needed in the world.
